Lady Bucs Basketball History

The history of Lady Bucs Basketball began in 1978 during a time when girls sports were slowly becoming accepted in the state of Alabama. Randy Barnes was the first coach for the 1978 - 1979 season for the school which was then known as W. A. Berry High School.

Terry Stephens took over the program in 1979 and developed the foundation for the program, comprising a five year record of 77-26 through 1984.

Legendary football coach and athletic director, Bob Finley, took over the girls program in 1984.  The respect which Coach Finley had already acquired over a long time helped gain statewide acceptance not only in basketball but other girls sports as well.  He took the program to new levels in acquiring a ten year record of 234 - 67, including five Final Four spots in 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1993.

In the summer of 1994, Berry High school became Hoover High School and Coach Finley had already transitioned into the new and present location. However, he sadly died shortly before the school year began and his long time assistant and brother-in-law, Ron Jones, took over the program.  Over the next five years, Coach Jones comprised a record of 120-34 including a trip to the Final Four in 1995.

Lori Elgin took over the Lady Bucs program in 1999.  During her eight year tenure, she comprised a 214-56 record including two state runner-up spots in 2000 and 2003 as well as the first State Championship in 2001.

Donnie Quinn took over the program in 2007 and through his first three seasons, has acquired a 91-9 record with a state runner-up spot in 2009 and the second State Championship for the Lady Bucs in 2010.

There have been several Lady Bucs sign scholarships to various schools during the history of the program and many more former players have gone on to various successful careers and walks of life.  The winning tradition and legacy of the girls basketball program has been strongly established over 30 years and will continue to do so in the years to come.
