HHS Math Team Places 16th at National Convention

15-August-2017 (HHS) - The Hoover High School Math Team placed 16th in the nation at the 47th annual Mu Alpha Theta (MAT) National Convention in Buffalo, New York. The HHS Theta Team placed 9th in the nation.

The teams, led by teachers Laura Entrekin and Martin Rushano, worked all summer in preparation for the week-long convention held July 17-21, 2017.

The invitational consisted of 700 students from 60 of the best schools in the nation. Of these 700 students, 11 were from HHS. Their accomplishments can be found below.

  • Jason Lee (9th in the Nation on Oral Presentation and 35th on BC Calculus)
  • Amy Zhang (21st in the Nation in Multivariate Calculus and 23rd on Limits and Derivatives)
  • Mariam Massoud (35th in the Nation on Calculus Applications)
  • Emily Su (5th in the Nation on Poster Presentation and 13th on Oral Presentation)
  • Daniel Michael (31st in the Nation in Complex Numbers)
  • Shezhan Maredia (16th in the Nation on Equations and Inequalities)
  • Joseph Bearden (20th in the Nation on Gemini Overall)
  • David Xi (8th in the Nation on Number Theory and 13th on Equations and Inequalities)
  • Abhinav Venkatesan (9th in the Nation on Oral Presentation)
  • Will Couch (13th in the Nation on Codes and Ciphers and 15th on Conic Sections)
  • Isaiah Lee (20th in the Nation on Geometry Applications and 19th on Triangles)

MAT is the National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society. They are dedicated to inspiring an interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics in high school and two-year college students.
