Born in San Diego, California. Moved to Panama and then spent most of childhood in the DC area. Took my first art lessons at the Smithsonian Institute when I was around 5 years of age. We moved to south Florida for a couple years for my dad's work then settled here in Alabama when I was 13.
I was allowed freedom of expression in high school at Shades Valley High by the art teacher at the time. So I was able to explore and develop my skills in many different mediums. I started college at Mississippi University for Women and then transferred to the University of Montevallo during sophomore year. Where I completed my education.
I married a year later and after working freelance. As an illustrator I worked for a couple in-house agencies and then chose to take time off to raise my children. When my sons were school aged a friend suggested I work as a teacher's aide. I loved working with the children and after my contract was up I went back to Montevallo and completed my Master's degree. I went to work in 1996 in Jefferson county for three years before taking a job with Hoover High School in 1999.
I am on the Board of Directors for the Bluff Park Art Assoc. And have served in official positions with the Alabama Art Educators Assoc. as well as several Art organizations.
Now I am the AP, Art 4, 3, 2 and 2-D Design teacher at Hoover High and an award winning artist.
www.marlahopekenney.com is my personal work website.
I have a wide range of media I work in but enjoy painting the best.
